Verona Area School District “Exceeds Expectations” on Department of Public Instruction report cards for 2020-21 school year

As a district, we are proud to say that we exceed expectations on the Department of Public Instruction report card for the 2020-21 school year!

Annually the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) releases report cards for each school district and school as required by Wis. Stat. 115.385. Report cards are one tool we can use to reflect on our strengths and areas for improvement. Report cards were suspended for the 2019-20 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and DPI urges caution when interpreting scores and ratings of the 2020-21 report cards because of the impacts of the pandemic.

For the 20-21 state report card the Verona Area School District earned an overall score of 75, placing the district in the Exceeds Expectation category. Due to unusual  circumstances caused by the COVID 19 pandemic in the 2019-2020 school year the state did not produce state report cards. The 2018-2019 report card reflected an overall score of 73.2 placing the district in the Exceeds Expectation category. 

The  Wisconsin Department of Instruction recommends that caution is used when interpreting the scores and ratings because of the testing conditions this past year.

  • VASD continues to “Exceed Expectations.” 
  • VASD students continue to score at a proficiency level in the top half of all districts in our state.
  •  VASD students are making growth in the WI Forward Exam at a rate in the top 15% of all districts in our state. 
  • VASD’s scores for chronic absenteeism, graduation rate, and 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency outpaces  the state average. The only area where our score falls below the state average is 8th-grade mathematics, an area we are currently addressing through the adoption of a new, rigorous, standards-based math curriculum.

At the foundation of the report cards are four priority areas. Schools and districts receive a score for each priority area:

  • Achievement - proficiency in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics on the annual state assessments
  • Growth - year-to-year progress in ELA and math achievement
  • Target Group Outcomes - outcomes for students with the lowest test scores: the Target Group.
  • On-Track to Graduation - reliable predictors of how successfully students are progressing toward completing their K-12 education.
