Open Enrollment

Online through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Open Enrollment webpage at this link.

Open enrolled students must re-apply after 5^th grade for entry into 6th grade. Students who open enroll into VASD in 6th grade have a spot through the end of 12th grade and do not have to apply for open enrollment again.

First, you'll be informed that VASD is aware that you have submitted an open enrollment application indicating your interest in VASD.

By June 5, 2026, you'll be notified if your open enrollment application has been approved or denied via US mail or email. If the application is approved, you will be notified of the specific school or program to which your student is assigned.

If you missed the open enrollment deadline, you could be eligible to apply via the Alternate Open Enrollment time period.  Alternate open enrollment applications must be submitted during the school year in which the pupil wants to begin attending school in the nonresident school district.  For more information, please read Applying for Open Enrollment Using the Alternative Application Procedure.  To apply, visit Public School Open Enrollment - Alternative Open Enrollment Application. 

Yes. Families may use the open enrollment application to indicate interest in a specific charter school, the Two Way Immersion (TWI) program, and/or a particular Pre-K/4K site, elementary, or middle school. The preferred programs and schools page on the open enrollment application looks like this. 

Seats in charter schools and the TWI program are limited and many are filled through lotteries conducted in March. Under Wisconsin law, districts are not permitted to approve or deny open enrollment applications until May 1. Consequently, indicating interest through open enrollment does not guarantee placement in those programs. Families who indicate interest will be placed on the appropriate program waitlist if space is not immediately available.

If a charter school or TWI seat is not available, a student may still be offered a seat elsewhere in the district if space exists. When openings occur in a charter school or the TWI program, families on the waitlist are contacted in the order in which they accept the offered spot in the district. Depending on the grade level, school, and program, there are some years when no waitlist exists and open-enrolled students may be able to begin in their preferred placement that same fall.

Preferences are taken into consideration; however, students are placed where space is available.

You may apply for open enrollment during the open enrollment window. However, there is no guarantee a student attending on an expiring tuition waiver will be placed in an open enrollment spot.

Parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from school in the non-resident school district. Economically disadvantaged families may apply for reimbursement of a portion of their transportation costs through the Department of Public Instruction.  To learn more visit DPI Open Enrollment Transportation and Transportation Reimbursement.

If a pupil has attained senior status while a resident of a school district, the pupil may complete the senior year in that school district, even if the pupil is no longer a resident of that district.

Each school board determines whether a pupil has attained senior status. Where there is no policy, many school boards consider the pupil to have attained senior status upon completion of the junior year.

Once a pupil has attained senior status, the pupil may continue to attend the school district until the pupil graduates or until the end of the school term in which the pupil turns 21.

VASD Senior Rule Policy 420-Rule(1) 

Any senior student who attains senior status while a resident of the District and then moves out of the District is eligible to complete his/her senior year in the District without payment of tuition. In this situation, the student simply must inform the school office of their move out of the District and their intent to continue their senior year in the District.
