Why NCS?

  • We are a Community That Brings Together Knowledge and Nature

The educational needs of New Century School (NCS) students are met in multi-age classrooms with team teaching and a student-centered approach to learning. We strive to help students become resourceful problem-solvers and critical thinkers. Teachers encourage students to pose thoughtful questions. Then, they help the children effectively seek answers to guide their learning. We believe that this questioning process makes learning more exciting, relevant and memorable.  We believe that solving problems in our global world demands flexible and innovative thinking. Therefore, we strive to prepare students to be self-motivated learners who approach new challenges with confidence and creativity.

Our curriculum is dynamic and centered around study of the natural world with instruction that uses environmental themes to tie together all academic subjects while also including frequent and imaginative use of technology by both teachers and students. Local examples of the natural world, such as the Upper Sugar River Watershed and Verona Area School Forest, serve as a backdrop for core subjects (literacy, science, social studies, and math).  Nature provides an engaging context for scientific exploration and hands-on learning.

It may seem cliche to say “It takes a village to raise a child," yet community effort is at the heart of New Century School. Our village includes teachers, staff and families who are dedicated to making this school a unique place for children to begin a lifetime of learning. Families give their time and effort with the belief that NCS is a special place. We include community partners who care about the environment and are willing to help children experience and understand nature and the wonder it holds. Whether you are an educator, a family looking for a school home or a community member looking to support your community, you are invited to be a part of our village.

Mission Statement

  • At New Century School, we provide a nurturing environment and are committed to the success of every student.  Students, teachers, and families form a partnership for learning.  We strive for all students to discover joy, beauty, wonder, and greatness within our natural environment, as well as within themselves and others.  We help all students to grow in their abilities to think critically, solve problems, communicate, use technology, and be globally competent through high engagement in integrated curricular lessons, including a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  We value the uniqueness of each student.  We empower all students to be active participants in their own learning through student inquiry and personalized learning opportunities.
