Substitute Opportunities

Substitutes play a necessary and valuable role in the education of our students.  VASD substitutes enjoy flexibility in work locations and workdays.  As a substitute, you can choose which schools you would like to work in and set your own availability.  

We have closed accepting applications for teacher and support staff substitutes for the 2023-2024 school year.  We will begin taking applications for the 2024-25 school year on June 17th, 2024, through WECAN. Please go to this link to apply 6/17th and after for all subbing positions: WECAN

We strive for seamless educational excellence for our students, and you can be a part of this effort by becoming a Substitute Teacher. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin substitute license may be considered.  A substitute training course is required by DPI for the three-year substitute license. The district does not provide training. is currently the least expensive complete online course. A Wisconsin educator license or three-year substitute license is required.



Daily Substitute Teachers: $150 per day (7.5-hour day) or $20/hour

Exclusive Substitute Teachers: $195 per day/5 days a week commitment through the school year or $175 per day/4 days a week commitment through the school year. Email the Sub Coordinator Deana Beckwith for more details at 

Secretarial Support

Do you love working with people in a busy office setting?  We are seeking substitutes to help in our school offices.  Technology skills are helpful, and some training is provided.  You can choose to perform substitute work in school offices only or in classrooms as well.


School Secretary Substitute:  $15.25/hour


Classroom Support

High school diploma or equivalent is required. May lead to full-time, permanent work.

Qualifications: experience working with children, bilingual skills, sign language skills, or the ability to work with special-needs students.


Special Education Assistant Substitute:  $18.25/hour

Education Assistant Substitute:  $15.25/hour

Office Support (Secretary) Substitute:  $15.25/hour

Food Service

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Prior training or education in sanitation, food handling procedures, quantity cooking, or customer service is preferred but not required. 


Substitutes: $15.25/hour



Duties include, but not limited to: providing emergency nursing services during the school day and direct nursing management of health/illness needs of individuals during the school day within VASD policies and procedures and assisting teachers, students and families in obtaining appropriate health care services. Requires a nursing background as a Registered Nurse (RN) with BSN, school nursing, public health or pediatric training/experience preferred.


Nurse Substitutes: $32/hour
