Requirements

Connect with the "Seal Advisor"

  • The "Seal Advisor" is a teacher who understands the Seal requirements and provides guidance to students pursuing the Seal.

  • Interested students should complete a Google Form in order to be connected with the Seal Advisor.

  • The Seal Advisor will meet with the student to discuss the requirements listed below, address any questions, and ensure the student understands the expectations.

  • If the student determines they would like to proceed, the Seal Advisor will give the student access to the Seal of Biliteracy Google Canvas course.

Students who qualify for a Seal of Biliteracy must demonstrate:

  • Proficiency in a language other than English with a qualifying score (Intermediate High or above) on one of the following approved assessments:

  • Proficiency in English is measured with a qualifying score on one of the following:

      1. ACT English Language Arts assessment (for native English speakers or students who exited English learner services more than four years ago)

      2. ACCESS for ELLs (for current English learners or students who exited English learner services fewer than four years ago)

  • Sociocultural / Bicultural Component

    • Hosting an exchange student from the target culture + essay in TL about the experience. Check out these local opportunities! 

    • Travel w/ evidence of cultural immersion and use of language + essay in the target language about the experience 

    • 20 hours of service w/ evidence of cultural immersion and use of language 

    • Reflection essay on your experience of being immersed in the partner language. Choose ONE of the 3 topics:

        1. The Relationship Between Your Languages, Culture, and Identity

        2. How English and the Partner Language Complement Your Life

        3. Recognition of a Person who Made a Difference in Your Life, Language, and Learning

    • ASL Students may work with WESP-DHH and work in an immersive camp or summer volunteering option of 20 hours minimum.

    • Other proposals will be reviewed on a student-to-student basis

  • Biliteracy Competence

    • 1 media essay/presentation in the partner language

      • WL/Heritage/TWI projects/essays

    • 1 media essay/presentation in English

      • History/Social Studies project/essays

      • English books/essays

 

All Seal requirements must be completed on or before April 21 of the student's senior year.
