(VERONA) – (June. 23, 2017) Verona Area High School (VAHS) and Boys & Girls Club of Dane County (BGCDC) are pleased to announce the college choices of the Class of 2017 College Ready Scholars and College Club. 87% of students enrolled in the VAHS College Ready Scholars and 100% of the seniors who participated in College Club have received college acceptance letters are bound for college this fall!

In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, the College Club and College Ready Scholars Program are college readiness programs operated within the Verona Area High School to help students in the academic middle overcome academic challenges and help students reach college readiness benchmarks, so they are prepared to thrive when they enroll in college. Through elective course work, academic support, tutoring, advising, and college and career workshops, students are prepared to make access to post-secondary education a reality.

According to VAHS data, students of color face serious challenges in day-to-day learning, limiting their access to post-high school education or career readiness. Both College Ready Scholars and College Club programs are addressing these disparities by providing students with additional assistance in meeting the academic, emotional and social needs while working to improve content knowledge and remove barriers to academic success.

“Each of these programs have been critical to addressing the academic achievement and graduation disparities of students of color. Our students in these programs have worked hard and it has paid off,” said Hammen. “Our district’s mission is Every Student Must Succeed and it is programs like these that make that mission a huge success,” said VAHS Principal Pamela Hammen.

Over the past seven years, the Verona Area College Club program has provided quality tutoring support services to VAHS students. College Club participants receive academic tutoring, supplemental support for enrollment in Advanced Placement courses, career exploration activities, study skills strategies, and other extracurricular and social enrichment opportunities. In 2015, VAHS and BGCDC introduced the College Ready Scholars course, which focuses on helping students reach college readiness benchmarks in English and Math along with college knowledge and study skills strategies to increase academic confidence and readiness for life after high school.

At the Senior Recognition Ceremony, students in both programs were recognized for their accomplishments in front of family and classmates. “The Senior Recognition Ceremony is a one-of-a-kind event where we get to recognize and celebrate the achievements of our College Ready Scholars and College Club Program students who are graduating from high school and enrolling into college. We are thrilled to see our youth reach their full potential and as a result receive multiple post-secondary and scholarship opportunities,” said Michael Johnson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County.
