VASD Board Governance Policies

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is VASD's board governance model?
VASD's board governance model allows the superintendent and board members to collaborate and effectively manage the district’s operations. The board functions as a policy-making body, while the superintendent manages the district within the parameters of board-established policies. Board members are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the district and its schools.
We are committed to transparency as we make this important transition for the future of our board governance and district operations. The superintendent and district leadership team will provide quarterly progress updates regarding the updated governance model at regularly scheduled board meetings.
-
How is this model different from how the board operated in the past?
Until now, the Board of Education did not use a defined framework for district governance, instead governing by following state- or federally mandated policies, procedures, regulations, and practices, based largely on tradition.
Through a board governance model, the superintendent is responsible for following board policies to manage the operations of the district. The board holds the superintendent accountable to meeting the goals it has set.
-
How will this model help the district achieve its strategic plan goals?
The board governance model provides a clear, well-articulated framework for ensuring the successful execution of the district’s strategic plan. One of the pillars of the plan is to support and empower staff by establishing and upholding clear performance expectations.
The model guarantees transparency when it comes to the performance expectations the district holds for its staff and schools, enabling every person in the organization to remain focused on student growth and achievement.
-
How will community members be able to engage with the board?
The shift to the board governance model does not change how our community members can engage with the district and board as we work together to ensure the success of our schools. The board and superintendent continue to welcome feedback and participation through our school district committees, workgroups, focus groups, and other opportunities.
Verona Area School District board members will direct questions from the public to the appropriate school and district leaders to respond.
-
What is the focus group schedule?
The board is in the process of developing a focus group schedule to engage with the community on topics important to the present and future of VASD. The schedule will be posted here and publicized via social media, email, and other venues. Check back for updates.
