2022-23 Instructional Minutes Make-Up Plan and Schedule
The inclement weather conditions during winter school days have disrupted our school's schedules. This page details how students will be expected to make up instructional minutes, as state law requires. Our make-up efforts will minimize disruption to previously scheduled events to the extent possible.
Pre-Kindergarten (VAFFY 4K)
Families with children in Pre-Kindergarten (4K) will continue to receive information from Jennifer Skibba, Early Learning Coordinator, regarding schedules and activities for 4K students. Information will be shared via email and monthly newsletters (archive available here).
Elementary Schools (Kindergarten - 5th Grade)
No additional minutes have been added to the end of the school day at elementary schools except for Core Knowledge Charter School and Stoner Prairie Elementary School.
Beginning on Monday, March 6, school dismissal time was extended by five minutes to 3:10 PM at Stoner Prairie Elementary School because of shared buses with Savanna Oaks and Core Knowledge Charter School (CKCS) elementary grades because of shared buses with the CKCS middle school grades.
While elementary schools already have well over the number of instructional minutes required by law, the VASD has high standards for instruction and learning. In alignment with our standards, we are offering supplemental learning options for elementary students as described below.
On Mondays April 3, April 17, May 1, and May 15, students have the opportunity to participate in standards-based learning opportunities aligned to grade level content at home prior to school on these Late Start Mondays. Students will attend school on the Late Start Monday schedule on these days.
-
The plans for this optional learning include students engaging in one core subject area each week. Your child’s teacher will provide paper/pencil activities to take home the Friday preceding each of these dates.
-
The activities are expected to take approximately 20-60 minutes.

The information communicated earlier noted that we missed equal numbers of Day 1 and Day 2; however, we have missed more of Day 1 instruction as indicated above. The district has a plan for students to make up these minutes of instruction that prioritizes consistency for the benefit of families with students across K-12. The late starts on April 3, April 17, May 1, and May 15 will be asynchronous learning opportunities for students. Because we have missed more Day 1’s than Day 2’s our Asynchronous Lessons will reflect that. We are not including 7th period as there are already more minutes in this period and these classes meet daily.
-
Students will participate in standards-based learning opportunities aligned to their current classroom curriculum, learning, and “I Can Statements” to complete at home prior to school on those Mondays.
-
Students will be able to access lessons in Canvas.
-
Educators will provide feedback on student work.
-
Families of students with Individualized Education Plans who participate in Essential Elements will receive activities aligned to the essential elements from their child’s case manager.
Monday, June 5, will *not* be a Late Start Monday. On June 5, students will follow the regular bell schedule for a Day 2, from 8:45 to 4:00 pm.

The decision to cancel school is never taken lightly. Many factors are weighed as a part of the decision making process. Please watch this video from Superintendent Dr. Tremayne Clardy about the complexities of this decision. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to your student’s building principal.
