Two Way Immersion Program 2014-15
Verona Area School District is proud to continue offering the Two-Way Immersion (TWI) program option for parents of children entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2014. Students will learn 50% of their academic content in Spanish and 50% in English. VASD plans to enroll an equal number of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers, who will learn together throughout the school day.
The goals for students in the TWI program are: to achieve a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in both English and Spanish, to attain academic achievement levels equal to or exceeding state standards, and to foster positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors throughout the school and community.
Two TWI parent information meetings have been held: Nov. 25 at Glacier Edge LMC and Dec. 5 at the Boys & Girls Club. Two additional TWI parent information sessions are planned. One is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 17 in the Community Room at Nakoma Heights Apartments, 4929 Chalet Gardens Rd, Fitchburg and the other at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Sugar Creek Elem Step Room, located at 420 Church Ave in Verona.
The deadline for the first selection of TWI applications is Friday, December 20. The district will conduct a lottery in early January and place 24 English speakers and also place 40 Spanish speakers from this first set of applications. A waiting list will be kept of those interested in both the Spanish and English side of the program and additional students will be placed later in the school year as space allows. Students from all attendance areas in the district can apply and will be provided transportation to these sites if chosen for the TWI program.
Please see the links below for a TWI program application and more information. All parents that are interested in this program option are required to attend a parent information session. Please call Alexis Nass at 497-2159 to make arrangements for a meeting to learn about the TWI program.
