Update on Country View Elementary School
Posted July 29
It has been 43 days since an EF- tornado heavily damaged Country View Elementary School, we have 36 days until September 2nd, the first day of the 2014 - 2015 school year. Country View Elementary school - WILL BE OPEN FOR STUDENTS ON THE 2nd!!!
Great progress continues to be made on the reconstruction of Country View and the to-do list is getting shorter and shorter. Since the last update the following has taken place:
-All the playground equipment has been removed - delivery and installation of the new equipment is anticipated to happen in two weeks time depending on availability. (this may be one of the few items that push the September 2nd start of school date).
-The gym floor installation is nearing completion. Painted lines and finishing will take final completion close to the third week in August.
-The chiller that was heavily damaged has been replaced and the new chiller is on line.
-The roof replacement continues to be on schedule with an anticipated completion date of August 18th.
-The three rooms in the purple pod that were completely destroyed are now rebuilt, inspections completed and drywall will be going up in those rooms later this week with painting to follow.
-Most of the areas impacted have been repainted, flooring is starting to go down and casework (cabinets etc.) will follow shortly after that.
-Windows that were blown out in other places in the building are being replaced and ceiling grid is being installed.
-Paving of asphalt / concrete areas damaged by heavy equipment is slated for removal / grinding / replacement in the second week in August.
-Landscaping / seeding and tree planting is taking place this week.
In addition to all this work being completed by Findorff and their subcontractors, many of the teachers who have classrooms in the purple pod have been in going through their inventory to see what's missing. My thanks to all the staff who have had a hand in this process as this is a lot of tedious work that no one else can do.
There are a couple of items beside the playground that may push up to the very end of August or slightly beyond. The permanent windows in the destroyed classrooms we know will not be in until late September. Temporary windows will be installed in the interim, they just won't be operable (can't open them). Also, some of the exterior doors were damaged and need to be repaired / replaced and that may not happen until September. They all operate appropriately so the repair / replacement is for cosmetic purposes.
We won't have a final dollar amount for the reconstruction for some time yet. All of the loss is covered by insurance except for our deductible which is $25,000. The initial estimate of the repairs was between $3 and $4 million dollars and based on the scope of work, that's likely to be an accurate estimate.
Again I want to thank Findorff and their subcontractors for their exemplary work and dedication to the reconstruction of our school. Many of the workers on site have school age children of their own and understand the importance of having us up and running in time for school. It's a big deal to them because it's a big deal to our kids and community. They have responded to the challenge for sure!
Unless there is some unexpected turn of event, I will post just one more update before school begins. If you have any questions about the reconstruction of Country View, please don't hesitate to send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
