Statements regarding race-related comments of substitute staff member

VERONA, Wis.--The Verona Area School District recently became aware that a person who has worked for the Verona Area School District on an infrequent basis as a substitute in a support staff role made racially insensitive comments on a local televisions’ social media page related to a story posted by that station. The following is a joint statement from District Superintendent Dean Gorrell and School Board President Noah Roberts:

“The views expressed by that individual are completely incompatible with our District mission and the pillars of our strategic plan, particularly our pillar of creating safe, inclusive learning environments for all of our students. We believe the interests of our students, parents and  staff to fulfill our public service to them while maintaining their confidence in our ability to do so requires action. After our investigation, we have terminated any further relationship with this individual.

The events of the last month have laid bare again 400 years of systemic racism and oppression. Equity for all people demands that systems, whether educational, medical, corporate, media, religious, municipal, state or federal, as well as individuals, no longer actively assert or passively accept the status quo, expecting someone else to do something about it.

Eliminating barriers to success and systems of oppression requires our individual and collective commitment and action. The Verona Area School District has a very long way to go in fulfilling our mission of Every Student Must Be Successful. Each day we become more aware of how our actions, or inaction impacts the lives of our students and separates us from our mission.  We are absolutely committed to learning and changing so that each and every one of our students has a safe, inclusive learning environment and that all of our students are successful.”
