Fourth and 5th grade students at New Century Elementary listened to presentations by Heather Hiusmann (left) Rebecca Hiegel (right) on information, appreciation, and awareness of individuals with Down Syndrome. Heather is a Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin, Madison Chapter Board Member. Rebecca is from the Milwaukee Area Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin.
Students had the opportunity to also experience simulations to understand what it's like to have Down Syndrome. Presenters gave students marshmallows to insert in their mouths and carry on conversations, learning individuals with Down Syndrome have much smaller mouth cavities making the every-day occurrence of talking a larger challenge.
