Verona Board of Education approves mostly virtual return to school September 8

VERONA, Wis.— The Verona Area School District Board of Education voted at its July 27 meeting to start the school year virtually for most students with some grade levels receiving the option to return in person.

“Nobody wants our children back in school more than we do,” Superintendent Dean Gorrell said. “The Board’s action allows us to bring our youngest learners and their teachers back to school in a safe, controlled manner in accordance with all the requirements from Public Health Madison and Dane County.”

Parents will have two different instructional models to choose from. The first model is an all virtual start with a possible return to in-person instruction based on public health data.  The second model is all virtual only for at least the first semester, regardless if in-person instruction is possible.  Parents of children in grades K-2 can choose all virtual or have their children attend in-person half-days four consecutive days a week.  Parents of students in four-year-old kindergarten will have the option of in-person or virtual instruction.  Also included in the reopening is a plan to provide in-person support and instruction for some students with special needs as well as mental health support.

Scheduling details are still being formulated and information will be sent out to families as soon as they are known.

Lastly, the Board voted to delay the start of school until Tuesday, Sept. 8 to provide more time for preparation and professional development for staff.

A recording of the July 27 Board meeting is available on the District website.
