Virtual Critical Consciousness Institute

Virtual Critical Consciousness Institute

for VASD Staff and Families

Facilitated by Percy Brown and Dr. Rainey Briggs

Are you interested in learning more about what you can do to disrupt predictable outcomes for marginalized student populations?

Critical consciousness is:

  • The ability to perceive educational, social, economic and political oppression and to take action against the oppressive elements of society.

During this multiple day opportunity, participants will engage in self-reflection and experiential based learning that will deepen their understanding of opportunity gaps in schools.

 In the workshop, participants will:

  • Experience a deepened awareness of systemic oppression and why opportunity gaps exist

  • Learn about inequities through personal narratives from facilitators

  • Explore research-based strategies that can reduce implicit bias, stereotype threat and microaggressions

  • Examine research-based strategies that can raise academic achievement for students of color
