Our Superintendent Search Firm

The Board of Education voted unanimously to bring on a superintendent search firm to lead the process for a nationwide superintendent search. More than a dozen companies were sent a Request for Proposal from VASD, with a handful of companies responding with interest. The board created a subcommittee to focus on the proposals and has selected the following company to assist VASD in hiring a new superintendent for the 2021-2022 school year:

Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) brings a long history of expertise and enthusiasm to superintendent searches. In their 30+ years, they have completed nearly 1,400 searches, with 500 held in the Midwest alone. Student enrollment in these districts range from less than 500 students to upwards of 150,000, serving rural, urban and suburban districts. Ninety-four percent of the superintendents they have placed have stayed in their position for more than three years.

Their proposal shared their plan to carry out the following phases:
•In the engage phase, they will involve stakeholders in the process from beginning to end through online surveys, focus groups, interviews, community forums, as well as virtual town halls, forums and interactive webinars.

•In the recruit phase, they collaborate in developing a customized application process as the Board has a private portal to access applications, and they utilize a full network of more than 100 associates nationwide in identifying and recruiting highly talented candidates to match VASD's needs. They screen and do reference checks on all applicants, while top applicants are given a 30-45 minute interview, followed by additional background searches and summarized in reports for the Board to review.

•In the select phase, they meet with the Board to discuss all top candidates and ask if the Board desires to add or replace any of those chosen to take part in the final interview process. Final applicants are scheduled for interviews through HYA, followed by a second round, per the Board's recommendations. HYA drafts interview scripts and appraisal forms for all interviews, and also assists with negotiating salary and benefits per the applicant's expectations as well as market conditions. Once finalists are selected, HYA assists in final "day in the district" events and site visits that the Board desires, while a validation process is completed by an independent third party.

•In the transition phase, the final chosen candidate meets with the Board to discuss the position. HYA offers two days of coaching to develop a 100-day plan and facilitate the superintendent evaluation process.

We look forward to working with staff, families and the community on selecting our new superintendent!
