Middle School FINAL Attendance Area & Phasing Rules

MIDDLE SCHOOLS:

Below are three maps that depict the Verona Area School District boundaries and attendance areas. They also show the 61 different neighborhoods that we have divided the District into for analysis and reference purposes.

Click here for Map 1 - CURRENT MIDDLE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AREAS shows the district boundary (the heavy, black border line) and the Badger Ridge attendance area in the blue color and the Savanna Oaks attendance area in brown. These middle school attendance areas are in effect through the 2019 – 2020 school year.

Click here for Map 2- NEW DETAILED MIDDLE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AREAS (2020 – 2021) shows the Badger Ridge and Savanna Oaks attendance areas that will begin to take effect in the 2020 - 2021 school year (Fall 2020), using similar colors for each attendance area as Map 1. **ZOOM IN FOR STREET NAME DETAILS

Click here for Map 3 - CHANGED MIDDLE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AREAS (2020-2021) highlights those areas within the District that will change middle schools starting in the 2020 - 2021 school year either from Badger Ridge to Savanna Oaks or Savanna Oaks to Badger Ridge.

The following details how the new middle school attendance areas will work in an effort to ease transitions:

1. For the 2019-2020 school year, all middle school students will attend their current attendance area middle school as shown in Map 1, except for the middle school Two-Way Immersion (TWI) and Chinese programs as described below

2. In 2020-2021, the new middle school boundaries (Map 2) will go into effect for incoming 6th graders only. 7th and 8th graders will continue to attend their existing middle school. There will be NO change in middle school for any these students during their Verona Area middle school career, assuming the location of the student’s home residence does not change during that time.

3. In 2021-2022, the new middle school boundaries will go into effect for that year’s incoming 6th graders. In the fall of 2021, all incoming 6th graders and rising 7th graders will then attend middle school based on the new attendance area map (Map 2), while 8th graders will continue to attend middle school based on the middle school attendance areas that exist today (Map 1). No current middle school student will change which middle school they attend, unless their family moves to a different part of the District.

4. In 2022-2023, the new middle school boundaries (Map 2) will be in effect for ALL middle schoolers. Incoming 6th graders will attend middle school according to the new boundary map. There will be no change in middle school for the then-existing 7th and 8th graders, since the new attendance areas already took effect for those students when they entered 6th grade.

5. If you are a family that will be impacted by having student-siblings in two middle schools simultaneously in 2020-2021 or 2021-2022, we will allow your older student to transition to the middle school designated by the new attendance area map (Map 2) at the time their younger sibling enters middle school. Whether or not to transition an older sibling will be the choice of the affected families; transitioning an older sibling to the younger siblings’ school will not be mandatory.

6. Middle school students (grades 6 – 8) who move into from outside the District for the 2020 – 2021 school year or later school year shall attend the middle school as detailed in Map #2.

7. Middle school students (grades 6 – 8) who move within the District for the 2020 – 2021 school year or later shall attend the middle school as detailed in Map #2. If that move happens during the course of the school year, they may finish that school year at the school they started the year at. District transportation will not be provided. If the move places them in a new middle school attendance area, that placement takes effect the start of the following school year.

8. Students enrolled in the Two-Way Immersion (TWI) or Chinese middle school programs will attend Badger Ridge regardless of location of residence in the District. Middle School TWI students will attend Badger Ridge starting the 2019 – 2020 school year. Middle school students in the Chinese program will attend Savanna Oaks in the 2019 – 2020 school year then move to Badger Ridge starting the 2020 – 2021 school year.

Under this plan, the school where your student begins 6th grade is the school they will be allowed to attend for all three years of middle school, assuming the location of the student’s home residence does not change during that time. This plan eliminates the need for any student to change schools during their middle school years, and it provides the smoothest transition to middle school for the vast majority of middle schoolers district-wide.

We recognize that this phased implementation of new middle school attendance areas may create some conflicts for a very limited number of families who could potentially have students in two different middle schools . However, if you are a family that will be impacted by having student-siblings in two middle schools simultaneously in 2020-2021 or 2021-2022, we will allow your older student to transition to the middle school designated by the new attendance area map (Map 2) at the time their younger sibling enters middle school. Whether or not to transition an older sibling will be the choice of the affected families; transitioning an older sibling to the younger siblings’ school will not be mandatory. For families that decide to keep their students at separate middle schools, we want to assure you that we will work with middle schools administrators to ensure, to the greatest degree possible, that school activities are scheduled so as to avoid conflict with each other to minimize the burden on “split” middle school families for the two years when this could occur under this phased implementation approach.
