The Verona Area Education Foundation (VAEF) is again coordinating the City Banner Art Project to recognize the unique talents of student artists while also beautifying our City. In spring of 2017, VAEF partnered with the City of Verona to create and install more than 40 street pole banners along East Verona Avenue. For 2018, we hope to engage additional students to extend the banners into downtown Verona to complement the recently completed streetscape project.

Students interested in submitting a piece of work should click here to download instructional and delivery guidelines. Submitted art may utilize any medium (photography, ceramics, fiber, paint, pencil, etc.), but should be designed as a vertical piece to fit the banner dimensions of 20.5” by 38” once it's enlarged. The theme will again be ‘Hometown USA’ and students should submit art reflecting things that they appreciate about the local community.

Entries are due Dec. 22 by dropping them off at the VASD Central Office (700 N. Main St.) or the Verona Public Library during regular operating hours between December 18-27th. Every effort will be made to protect student artwork, but VAEF assumes no responsibility for artwork broken or damaged during transportation.

In addition to being installed on street banners, selected student artists and their families will be invited to an awards celebration in the spring to see the printed designs and be recognized for their efforts. They will also have the opportunity at this time to purchase a copy of their banner, suitable for hanging and can also elect to have it repurposed as a tote bag. Funds raised through the sale of banners will help the Education Foundation continue supporting grant requests by district staff for unique and innovative education opportunities for our students. To date, the foundation has awarded more than $100,000 in innovation grants to district classrooms.

A walking tour will also be produced and published to highlight both the student artists and their works. This piece will be made available for visitors and residents alike, honoring student artists and sharing individual stories behind each work of art.

City Banner Project Artist Reception
Artwork selected to be hung will be showcased along with artist recognition at the Verona Library on April 19 from 6:30-800pm. Printed banners will be on display at the event, and student artists will be able to see their finished work, receive a certificate honoring their achievement and enjoy light refreshments. Cake and ice cream will be served! Banners will remain on display at the library throughout the month of April.
To raise funds for future Banner Year celebrations, and to continue the Education Foundation’s mission of supporting unique and engaging learning opportunities for our students, copies of the banners will be auctioned off following the display period.

•Artists and their families will have an opportunity to purchase their student’s banner for private display without having to participate in the online auction. The cost to purchase the banner is $150, and payment can be made via check at the event, or online prior to the event by clicking here. Please place the banner number and artist’s name on the note to seller.

•Businesses in the area may click here to sponsor the banner project for $200. This donation will allow your business to receive a supply of walking tour brochures to make available to visitors at your business, and will also have your logo placed on the walking tour brochure in its printed and online formats. Any excess proceeds from this project will be used to fund foundation grants to Verona Area School District staff pursuing creative and innovative projects within the district. Businesses may also choose to purchase a copy of one of the banners, which can be displayed at the business, or home, or simply donate to the student artist. The cost to purchase and/or donate a banner is $150.

Proceeds benefit the VAEF classroom grant program. This program provides funding for district staff pursuing unique and innovative education opportunities for students in the district. Now in its 26th year, the VAEF has funded nearly 300 individual projects, providing over $100,000 for projects at each of the area schools.
